John Wright, MD, FAAP

John Wright, MD, FAAP is a Fort Lauderdale native and has been practicing pediatrics in the East Fort Lauderdale area since 1987.  After an undergraduate degree in chemistry from the University of Florida, he trained at the University of Miami’s School of Medicine and served a pediatric internship and residency there.  He serves as an adjunct faculty member at UM and also teaches family practice residents and medical students from Nova South East School of Osteopathic Medicine, and nurse practitioner students from Florida Atlantic University.  Dr. Wright has published and lectured on varied subjects including parenting, pediatric and adolescent preventive health, obesity, domestic violence, child maltreatment/mental health.  Dr. Wright’s advocacy for children include working with child drowning awareness, and car seat safety through the National Safety Council, and he was an advocate in promoting the State of Florida’s recent adoption of a more advanced system for newborn metabolic screening.  He was the recipient of the Mr. Mom-2003 award from Healthy Mother’s Healthy Babies, for chairing the Fetal and Infant Mortality Review Team since 1996.  He has also served as chairman of the Departments of Pediatrics at Holy Cross Hospital and Broward General Medical Center as well as a past President of the Broward County Pediatric Society.  

He has been serving as Medical Director of the Broward County Child Protection Team from 1987 to 1991 and from 1999 to present.  He has lectured at several national and international conferences on subject of Child Abuse and Neglect, has been quoted in the London Daily Telegraph, appeared on German and Chilean National Television and has published a review article: "Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy," in the Journal of Rare Diseases (Part 1, May- June, 1997, Part 2, July-Aug, 1997).  He has been an invited lecturer on the subject of Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy at the 11th National and 9th International Conference on Child Abuse and Disability in Riverside, CA, in 2003, the American Professional Society on Child Abuse and Neglect Symposium in Orlando, FL in 2005.  He was invited to lecture "Identification and Management of Category A Child Abuse" at the16th National Conference on Child Abuse and Neglect Portland, OR,.  He presented a newly described form of Abusive Head Injury entitled "Abusive Head Crushing, a distinctive constellation of clinical findings" at the First National and International Conference on Abusive Head Injury in Hershey PA in 2007.  In addition to these national and international meetings, he has lectured at Broward General Medical Center's Pediatric Grand Rounds, as well as the Pediatric Grand Rounds at the University of Miami, the Resident's meetings, Pediatric Club meetings at Nova South Eastern College of Osteopathic Medicine, and at the Miami Children's Hospital Pediatric Postgraduate Conference in 2002. He serves as a resource and teaches about child abuse to law enforcement officers and detectives throughout Broward County and is a member of the Broward County Child Abuse Task Force.  In 2009, he will be the first pediatrician in Broward County to be eligible to take the board certification examination in the new specialty of Child Abuse Pediatrics.
